I'm not saying that he's not on a mission to help humanity, but in order to do that, he needs money, attention and trust. In order to establish that, he's got to play the game in order to keep his companies alive and profitable because the only way he's going to change the world is by developing systems and products that can reach billions of people around the world. Without money, it's just not possible.

What I am saying is that the way he goes about gaining capital and attention is genius. If he used traditional marketing techniques and spammed everyone with advertising, it will only serve to distance his audience and make everyone think he's just a regular, for-profit company. If he went down that route, it would be really hard to build a public image that people will connect with.

By presenting himself as philanthropic, he is able to get away with huge publicity stunts, gain a bunch of positive attention, and monopolise industries without any backlash, even though his stunts sometimes fail.
